Dental Hygiene students and faculty have been waiting for pandemic restrictions to loosen so we could get back into the community and help give something back.
On Saturday, April 2, students and faculty volunteered for the Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences Health Expo held at Crossgates Mall. The ACPHS’s event included over 25 informational tables devoted to health topics, ranging from blood pressure, diabetes, dental education to macular degeneration. HVCC Dental Hygiene students and faculty discussed oral hygiene instruction, hidden sugars and pH levels in many popular beverages, and demonstrated nutritional “good foods vs bad foods” games for children to play.
On Saturday, March 26, students and faculty volunteered at the inaugural Student National Medical Association (SNMA) Healthy People, Health Fair held at Albany’s Capital City Rescue Mission. Our volunteers had the opportunity to educate not only residents of the center, but also medical students from Albany Medical College. HVCC students engaged in oral hygiene instruction and oral nutritional health education. The medical students had many questions about collaborative treatment between oral health and overall health.
Both events provided a terrific opportunity for our students to show some civic engagement and give back to the communities that help support our dental hygiene clinic.
